let's pack a picnic no. 3: it's a date
part three of our picnic series is all about a little laid-back romance
April 25, 2013Column: deliberate polish
set the tone by showing up in a rainbow of colors that give off a fun, playful vibe. a ladylike dress in a slinky knit is ultra flattering and will move with you, so you can sit comfortably with minimal adjustments. a little woven bag balances our need for something precious (it's small) and outdoorsy (it's wicker), and give yourself a boost (literally and figuratively) in a pair of platform sandals.
the key to keeping up appearances (now that you're all dolled up) is with savory and sweet small foods like mini quiches, berry tarts and bite-sized sandwiches. he’ll be impressed with a mix of palete pleasers, and you won’t have to worry about spills or an unmanageable mouthful of food. a note about that sandwich: think imaginative yet hearty. we combined asparagus, radishes, frisee and shredded chicken inside crusty bread.
china plates are a necessity (it hints at an acute attention to detail) and the showpiece--apart from your flirty smile, of course--is in a wicker-print champagne box, filled with your favorite bubbly so you can toast the afternoon away.
