they say a picture’s worth a thousand words, but artist amber ibarreche might say they’re worth one—or eight—depending on the poignant, punny quips she chooses for her eye-catching canvases and mixed-media collages.
she traces her interest in words and pictures to her childhood and a teenage comic book collection and continues in the tradition of artists like barbara kruger, but with her own graphically elegant voice. she’s shared gallery space with artist ryan mcginley, made a fan in lena dunham —and tonight, the recent l.a. transplant (by way of florida and new york city) debuts lost and profound, a solo show at smashbox studios in culver city.
